All Christians have an arch-enemy named Satan. An evangelist, Mr. Danny Johnson, said “Satan is not out to annoy us, but to destroy us!” He is not casually trying to hinder us, but would love to steal, kill, and destroy our life, at least water-down or nullify our Christian influence! (John 8:44; 10:10)

Mr. Johnson recommended 5 ways the enemy tries to destroy our faith in God by bringing very hard circumstance of life that appear to be hopeless:

1) Don’t Panic when we are faced with adversity. Realize we have a mighty God! In Exodus 13:3, 9, 14, 16 we are told that the children of Israel were brought out of the land of Egypt “by the strength of the hand of the Lord.” God led them by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night (Ex. 13:21-22; 14:19, 24; 33:9-10). Because deserts have no water nor food to help 1 million people, death appeared to be their only option. BUT GOD!

Not only did God protect them from the mighty hand of the largest nation at that time, Egypt, but He delivered them from starvation in the desert (Exodus 16) as well as providing water from the rock (Ex. 17:1-6). The children of Israel were on foot moving slowly so the Egyptian army in horse drawn chariots caught up with them at Red Sea and this appeared to be sure death. BUT GOD intervened! (Ex. 14:18-15:18) Other verses that show God’s power are in Daniel 2; 3 and 6).

2) Guard your mind from unnecessary negative thoughts. In other words, we need to not dwell on the bad news, but concentrate on who God is and what He has done for us. In 1 Peter 1:13, God tells us, “Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope…” Also, in Philippians 4:8, we are to think on the things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and anything praise worthy. Don’t dwell on destruction devastation, or death! Sometimes we are faced with these things, but fill your mind with Scriptures about our mighty God.

How do we “gird up our mind?” By memorizing, meditating on, and applying God’s Word to your life. Ask God to cover your mind with the blood of Jesus to protect it from anything that Satan would want to whisper in your ear (Ephesians 6—Armor of God).

3) Expect God to move on your behalf. God has all power to do anything. In Psalm 119:15-16, 18, David tells us, to meditate, contemplate, and delight God’s Word and His ways. Ask God to open your eyes, to see wondrous things from law. Our times are in God’s hand (Psalm 31:15; compare 37:23-24).

God will move on our behalf when He sees faith rising up in us. “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him…” (Hebrews 11:6) In Hebrews 11:5-6, Enoch pleased God because he had faith in God. Without faith, it is impossible to please Him (compare Hebrews 10:38). Faith is the positive side of apostacy.

Genuine faith believes that not only a divine being exists, but that the God of Scripture is the only God. Not believing is equivalent to calling God a liar (1 John 5:10). We must believe not only that the true God exists, but that He will reward men’s faith with forgiveness and righteousness. (compare Hebrews 10:35; Genesis 15:1; Deuteronomy 4:29; 1Chronicles 28:9; Psalm 58:11; Isaiah 40:10-11). Other verses on faith–Matthew 9:18-31, Mark 2:1-5); 4:40).

4) Fight back with Scripture when Satan tries to discourage you. We need to follow Jesus example and fight Satan with Scripture (Matthew 4). Our faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God (compare 1 Corinthians 1:24b; 2:5; 3:19, 21; 4:5, 19-20).

Praise for God is specifically what we need to memorize and quote when we are harassed with recurring negative thoughts. Also, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give him glory” (Revelation 19:6b-7a).

The height of your praise determines the depth of understanding you have about God.
Furthermore, the more we praise during adversity, the less power Satan has over us! Keep
praising God when Satan brings negativity in our mind.

The more we praise God, the more God will make His will clear to us. Praise is one of
the Christian’s offensive weapons for spiritual warfare. A combination of praise and the
Word of God coupled together and woven in each fiber of our life will be an invincible
combination that Satan with his angelic demons will not be able to pierce.

5) Never give up! As long as we have breath in our mouth, we need to stand on God’s Word and remind God of His promises. Remember, “God is greater than man” or Satan. (Job 33:12)

Find the promises of God that fit your fears in the Bible and repeat them when you are harassed by negativity. Look on the bright side of any situation and believe that God is going to work in the way that He knows is best for you.

“Let the high praises of God be in your mouth and the two-edged sword (God’s Word) in your hand”— (Psalm 149:6).
